Rue's Rescue Is a Reminder of Heat Risk to Pets

When Rue, a 16-week-old stray German Shepherd puppy, was found tied to a pole with no owner, food, water, or shelter in sight, she was already in heat distress. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan called for help, and our Emergency Animal Medical Technicians rescued her in the nick of time. Rue’s survival is just one example of the life-saving interventions our team is making across the Valley this summer. So far this year, we’ve responded to nearly 1,200 heat-related calls, a stark reminder that extreme temperatures remain a serious threat to our community’s pets. And Rue is far from alone. We're seeing a 10% increase in animal intake compared to this time last year, and are on pace for another record-breaking year. As the need continues to climb, so does our commitment to being there for every animal with nowhere else to turn.

2026 Legislative Session Recap The 2026 legislative session brought meaningful progress for Arizona's veterinary community. Building on last year's historic passage of Jerry's Law, we secured a major win for the Veterinary Loan Assistance Program, doubling repayment assistance to $200,000 per veterinarian, and advanced telemedicine legislation that modernizes how veterinarians can prescribe medications remotely. While our Certified Veterinary Technician alternate pathway bill didn't cross the finish line this session, the bipartisan support it received has set the stage for next year.
